— Chester, Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows |
Chester is a shopkeeper in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove who looks for Relics and Arcana and resells them. He can usually be found hiding in blue chests in Order of No Quarter stages. He also makes an appearance in Shovel Knight Dig.
Appearance[]
Chester wears white and blue clothing somewhat resembling a blend between a pirate and fortune teller. He has a teal headband that covers his eyes, and hairbands on his locks, as well as a teal binding and boot lining. His pants and gloves are a navy blue, matching his hair, and he wears a white tunic. He wears gold bangles, rings, a gold necklace, and golden ornaments on the hem of his tunic. He is often seen standing on his large light blue chest with golden lining, arms in his pants.
Story[]
Shovel Knight Dig[]
In Shovel Knight Dig, Chester owns the shop Chester's Accessories, and appears throughout the stages of The Well to sell Shovel Knight Accessories. He also appears on the surface camp inside his trusty Bohto Wagon, selling Accessories that then gets added to the selection pool of his wares in a stage.
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove[]
Shovel of Hope[]
In Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope, outside of his usual hiding spots, Chester can be found at the Juice Bar's reserve beneath the Village. He sells Relics to Shovel Knight, like the Fishing Rod and the Chaos Sphere, as well as missed Relics in stages however at a slightly higher price.
He appears again in the ending, watching the fall of the Tower of Fate and rejoicing with the rest of the Village's residents.
Plague of Shadows[]
In Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, Chester can again be found in Order of No Quarter stages, where he sells Arcana. However, because he is mistrustful of alchemists, he will severely overprice them. But he also offers an alternative: If Plague Knight can find any Relics, he will exchange them for the Arcana, free of any extra charge. These Relics would turn out to be the same items that Chester would later sell to Shovel Knight. He can also be found at the Armor Outpost but can only be talked to once Plague Knight clears it of Knights. He then offers any Arcana Plague Knight missed as well as a Big Tonic Bag.
He appears again in the ending to celebrate the end of the Enchantress' terror with the rest of the villagers.
King of Cards[]
In Shovel Knight: King of Cards, Chester can be found in any of the Houses of Joustus and the Glidewing, where he sells random Joustus card packs and Cheat Cards that allow the player an advantage. If the player loses any card in a Joustus match, they are able to repurchase them from Chester.
He appears again in the ending as one of the many in the Homestead recovering after King Knight betrays them.
Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon[]
In Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, Chester, alongside Puzzle Knight is one of the first people to greet Shovel Knight upon his arrival to the Pocket Dungeon, giving him a ride in his Bohto Wagon to Puzzle Knight's Camp. Ever the shrewd bussiness man, Chester has not let his imprisonment deter him to setting up a shop. During a Dungeon run he sells Relics, while at the Camp, he sells new relics that are then added to his pool of possible dungeon wares.
He alongside everyone is freed from the Pocket Dungeon once the true ending is achieved, and the true culprit behind the incident is revealed.

Trivia[]
- His sprite model is named "Shady Merchant".
- Chester's name is based off the fact he delves into chests and sells treasure.
- In the Iron Whale, Chester gets caught in the Teethalon's lure, which looks exactly like his chest. It's possible that it got stuck there somehow, but it's more likely that the chest is to lure humans in to feed on.
- However in Plague of Shadows, he is instead found in another blue chest in the extended area.
- The developers designed a Body Swap version for Chester, although only the main cast of Shovel of Hope had one added to the campaign.
- Specter of Torment is the only game where Chester doesn't make an appearance.
- At the ending of King of Cards, Treasure Knight is seen putting Chester's chest on the Teethalon.
