Stirs memories of the past, and is a constant reminder of your future.

The Phase Locket, also known as Keepsake Locket, is a Relic in Shovel of Hope and Plague of Shadows and a Gear in Specter of Torment.

Appearances[]

Shovel of Hope[]

Usage[]

The Phase Locket makes its holder temporarily invincible and capable of phasing through enemies or running on Spikes. It costs Magic 8 for each use.

The Forest of Phasing Relic Course is intended to be completed using the Phase Locket. This Relic is also the subject of the Another Dimension Feat which is earned by collecting Treasures icon 2000 lying on spikes, while using the Phase Locket.

Availability[]

It can be purchased from Chester for Treasures icon 1000 in the Lich Yard, or in the Village for Treasures icon 2000 after completing the stage.

Plague of Shadows[]

In Plague of Shadows, it is found in the Lich Yard's secret area marked by a Cipher Coin embedded in a wall. It can be traded to Chester for the Leech Liquid Arcana in the room Shovel Knight normally buys it.

In the ending, Specter Knight is looking for it in the chest Plague Knight can steal it from. Finding it has been stolen, the undead knight slices the chest in two and angrily throw shakes his fist.

Specter of Torment[]

In the prequel Specter of Torment, the Phase Locket appears in the gear tab as the Keepsake Locket. It keeps track of how many knights have been recruited to The Order of No Quarter and is red instead of blue.

The Keepsake Locket holds significance to Specter Knight. At the start of the game and after every level, the undead knight is seen reminiscing with the locket on the balcony of the Tower of Fate. As the campaign goes on, it is revealed it was originally a normal locket, a family keepsake of the departed Luan. He had given it to Donovan, because he had come to regard him as part of his family.

When the Enchantress killed and resurrected Donovan, she used the locket as a means to ensure Donovan would gather the 8 knights for the order as he had promised. With each new recruit, the locket gains in power, turning from blue to red. When 8 knights swear allegiance to the Enchantress, the locket will then be able to reverse death itself and bring one person back to life, but only once.

After Nightmare Reize was defeated at the end of Specter of Torment, the Enchantress sought to make Reize, Luan's son and Donovan's care, the final knight. However, Specter Knight chose to swear loyalty to her in the kid's place, finishing the deal and granting the locket power, which he then used on Reize instead of himself. He discarded his only chance at regaining his humanity and his free will to protect Luan's son from a lifetime of servitude to the Enchantress. He then decided to hide the locket inside a chest in his secret hideout in the Lich Yard.

Pocket Dungeon[]

The red Keepsake Locket makes a brief re-appearance in Pocket Dungeon, where it is used as an icon to signify when, during the Quandary Reverie, Specter Knight is about to transform back into Donovan, and vice versa, gradually lighting up as it readies for a Donovan shift, and gradually darkening as the time to return as Specter Knight approaches.

Trivia[]

  • The Phase Locket and the Mobile Gear are the only items in the game that have a connection to all four campaigns:
    • When he was alive, Specter Knight received the locket as a gift from his friend Luan, and he later stored it inside a chest inside Specter Knight's secret room at the end of Specter of Torment.
    • In King of Cards, Specter Knight is seen looking at the amulet for a brief moment before continuing his quest in the ending section of the Tower of Fate.
    • In Plague of Shadows, Plague Knight finds the Phase Locket inside Specter Knight's secret room, where he trades the locket to Chester in exchange for the Leech Liquid.
    • In Shovel of Hope, Chester sells the Phase Locket to Shovel Knight after getting it from Plague Knight.
  • It is implied that the invincibility powers of the Phase Locket originate from the residual magic left in it after its use on Nightmare Reize. It made it no longer able to completely control life and death but only able to temporarily "phase" between the two states, rendering its holder invulnerable as a side effect.
  • The only time the locket will show 8/8 knights recruited is during the final cutscene, after Specter Knight says he will become a part of the order. Just before that sentence, the locket is flashing red and white. After Specter Knight uses it, the icon turns blue as a result.
    • However, it will show 7/8 knights recruited and the locket will be red once again if the game's file is reloaded.
