Wow! Incredible! You really
are
Shovel Knight!

The Hedge Farmer, Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope

Hedge Farmer is a minor character in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove and a quest giver in the Puzzler's Pack DLC of Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. He is who Reize refers to as "uncle", and he is part of the large Hedge Family[1].

Appearance[]

Hedge Farmer is an anthropomorphic hedgehog farmer. He wears a green coat and a green hat, and carries a shepherd's crook.

Relationships[]

Reize[]

Reize's uncle, the Hedge Farmer, seemingly raised him teaching various lessons, like "being humble in victory", as evidenced by one of his victory quotes in Shovel Knight Showdown, and moves, like Reize's "Hedgespin" attack seen in the same game. Reize seems to remember and sincerely follow all of it.

Story[]

Shovel of Hope[]

In Shovel of Hope, Hedge Farmer can be found east from the shops in the Village, next to a pile of dirt. When questioned by Shovel Knight he express is skepticism about the knight's identity. As proof, he challenges the knight to dig up a nearby pile of dirt.

Hedge Farmer rubs his chin as he observes Shovel Knight starting to dig. He jumps with joy once the pile completely dug out, exclaiming that he really is Shovel Knight. Depending on how the Dig Pile is dug up, the dialogue changes: If the Trench Blade upgrade has been purchased, he is more ecstatic than usual, dubbing Shovel Knight "the Blue Burrower". If the Fishing Rod is used to "dig" the dirt, he comments that Shovel Knight has an unorthodox technique, and questions whether they are actually Shovel Knight or not.

He reappears in the ending, observing the fall of the Tower of Fate with the rest of the Village and rejoicing at the newfound peace.

Plague of Shadows[]

In Plague of Shadows, Hedge Pupil loses the key to the Hedge Family's home, resulting in Plague Knight blowing it up in order to reach the Potionarium. A picture depicting both Hedge Pupil and Hedge Farmer can be seen within the ruins of the house.

During the ending, he can be seen rejoicing at the destruction of the Tower of Fate, next to his seemingly restored house.

Specter of Torment[]

In Specter of Torment, Hedge Farmer is first mentioned by Reize, who says he told him there was "evil stuff going on" inside the Tower of Fate. He can later be physically during the ending, where Specter Knight carries Reize's unconscious body and deposits him at the doorstep of the hedgehog brothers' house. The door opens as Specter Knight leaves, with two silhouettes matching Hedge Farmer and Hedge Pupil appearing behind.

King of Cards[]

In King of Cards, Hedge Farmer appears at the beginning of the Rolling Roadhouse, offering King Knight advice on how to perform the Roll motion of the Shoulder Bash. Each time a Roll is properly performed, Hedge Farmer can be seen cheering, while he will be perplexed if the move is botched.

Shovel Knight Showdown[]

In Shovel Knight Showdown, Hedge Farmer appears at the end of Reize's story as one of his family and friends who fade away in his memories while trapped inside Dark Reize. He is also mentioned in one of Reize's quotes after winning a match, in which he says his uncle taught him to be humble in victory.

Pocket Dungeon[]

In Pocket Dungeon, Hedge Farmer appears in the Hedge Farm area of the hub, a location exclusive to the Puzzler's Pack DLC.

Initially, he draws attention to the Sturdy Bean in the room, and requests for it to be taken to the spot with sunlight. When a character attempts to place the bean there, a Fleeto appears, which can only be driven off with indirect damage. Once it is gone, the bean can then be planted by any shovel-wielding character.

The final step to make it grow is by paying the Hedge Farmer Gems 100000, the price he asks for performing his dance. This causes the bean to grow into a Beanstalk, which can be climbed to reach Castle Quandary, a legendary castle among the clouds.

The rest of his brothers also make a small cameo appearance, as inside the Hedge Farmer's burrow that can be entered with Mole Knight's dig ability there is, hanged to the wall, a photo depicting a group shot of Hedge Farmer himself, 'Edge Farmer, Sledge Farmer, Hedge Pupil, and Ledge Farmer, alongside their nephew Reize.

In EP8 of Puzzler's Pack DLC, another part of his subquest is revealed: He needs to be rescued from a side room during a run. Otherwise, the Hedge Farm and Castle Quandary are inaccessible due to Bricks and Tipp blocking the way to the Hedge Farm and the cloud that takes the knight directly to Castle Quandary is missing.

First talked to in the Village "Hedge Farmer: Are you really
the
Shovel Knight? Prove it by digging up this dirt!
"
Digging up the pile in more than one stroke "Hedge Farmer: Wow! Incredible! You really
are
Shovel Knight!
"
Digging up the pile in one stroke "Hedge Farmer: No way!
That was unbelievable!
The whole pile with one stroke...How is that even possible?! You truly are a Legend of Digging, Shovel Knight! My hero, the Blue Burrower!
"
Digging with the Fishing Rod "Hedge Farmer: Wel...Hmmm...That was something I never thought I'd see. Interesting technique, I guess? Maybe you are Shovel Knight?"

At the Rolling Roadhouse "Hedge Farmer:
Woah,
are you ok? Looks like your Vigor got knocked out! But that's ok, because this is the Roll Course!
Rolling is great! You can sail through dirt and get more distance without stopping or spinning up!
Just quickly press [x] again during your Shoulder Bash, but watch your spacing! You need a little runway.
"

Upon entering his side-room "Hedge Farmer: Oh my goodness, I'm surrounded!
HELP!!!
I'm a farmer, not an insect wrangler!
"
Talked to before clearing the bugs "Hedge Farmer:
The bugs are stilhere!
They're right there, don't you see them!?
"
Upon clearing the bugs "Hedge Farmer: Wow, did you actually squash all those bugs!? You really
are
a hero!
"
Talked to again "Hedge Farmer: ...and there's a camp nearby? Sounds like a good spot to rest my quills. I'll mosey on over right away!"
First talked to at the Hedge Farm "Hedge Farmer: Howdy, pal! As a farmer, I couldn't help but notice that massive bean over yonder. Have you taken a look?"
Before moving the Sturdy Bean (cycling) "Hedge Farmer: Beans need plenty of sun to thrive, but this one is too big for even
me
to budge.
"
"Hedge Farmer: Say, do you know anyone with the strength to give that bean a good bash?"
"Hedge Farmer: If we knew someone capable of attacking from below, we could probably move that bean."
"Hedge Farmer: If someone had a big round plate, we could probably get it to move."
"Hedge Farmer: It may be heavier than a sack of spuds, but if we could get that bean inside a bag, we might be able to move it!"
"Hedge Farmer: Moles are expert garden displacers - I wonder if we could convince one to lend us a claw?"
Trying to leave the room with the Sturdy Bean "Hedge Farmer:
Hold it right there, partner! Put that bean back where you
found it! I don't take kindly to such shenanigans!
"
When the Fleeto emerges "Hedge Farmer:
D'oh!
Another problem has cropped up - that's Fleeto. Regular attacks won't work on it.
"
Before defeating the Fleeto (cycling) "Hedge Farmer: We need someone that can hit harder than a hedgehog. Any takers?"
"Hedge Farmer: This Fleeto seems out of our league. Maybe we could find a way to move or swap its position instead?"
"Hedge Farmer: As a farmer, I'm no stranger to insecticide. Maybe we could try using poison attacks?"
Once the Sturdy Bean is in the spot with sunlight "Hedge Farmer:
Yes!
Alright, let's get this bean in the ground! But we can't do it without a good shovel.
"
After the Sturdy Bean is buried "Hedge Farmer: Just one more thing, but I'm hesitant to ask. Would you be willing to donate
20,000 Gems
to help us reach our goal?
"
Talked to again "Hedge Farmer: I know it sounds crazy, but I really do need
20,000 Gems
to make this happen.
Honest!
"
After paying the fee "Hedge Farmer: Trust me, your investment will not go to waste. Brace yourself for a true display of farming magic!"
When not enough money "Hedge Farmer: You'll need more Gems, my friend. True farming doesn't come cheap, I'm afraid."
Talked to after the dance is over "Hedge Farmer: It ain't much, but it's honest work, don't ya think?"
Talked to after leaving and reentering "Hedge Farmer: Hey there, partner! The beanstalk is growing like a weed! You'd be missing out if you don't climb it and enjoy the view."
"Hedge Farmer: Nothing beats a good hedge. Beans are little treasures from the ground, but hedges are like friends that grow with you!"
"Hedge Farmer: Wanna see my farming magic again? I'd love to show you, but it'll cost another
1,000 Gems
. Sound good?
"
Paying for the dance "Hedge Farmer: Much appreciated. Now, witness my farming magic!"

Trivia[]

  • Hedge Farmer is a reference to Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars, in which a skeptical toad asks that Mario jumps to prove his identity.[2]
  • The Hedge Farmer's nickname for Shovel Knight is a reference to Mega Man's nickname "The Blue Bomber".
  • If Shovel Knight has the Armor of Chaos equipped and the Trench Blade upgrade bought, the Hedge Farmer will still respond saying he dug it up with just one swing, even though he didn't.
  • In the Early Preview for Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon's Puzzler's Pack, Hedge Farmer initially had the following dialogue, before it was changed to allow players to pay for dances:

"Hedge Farmer: Hmm? Do you want to learn more about the dance of my people? Sorry, come back later, currently I am not in the mood for dancing..."
